Ranchos man in custody

A Douglas County man was taken into custody for a mental health evaluation Thursday after alarming his Gardnerville Ranchos neighbors as he ran with two handguns from his house into their yards.

Hugh Spencer, 51, allegedly told a neighbor he shot two people in his house and told her to call 911. He also told the woman people were shooting at him.

“Call the police,” he reportedly told a female neighbor. “There are people shooting at me at (my house).”

When police arrived at the scene in the 700 block of Bluerock Road about 3:20 p.m., the man was in neighbor James Wheeler’s yard D after dropping his guns in the neighbor Joe Mahoney’s yard.

It’s kind of weird,” Mahoney said. “It seems to me he kind of lost his mind.”

No one was injured during the incident and no charges were filed as of press time.

Wheeler said the man seemed more frightened than anything else. Wheeler told the man to put his hands behind his head, and he complied.

Douglas County sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene about one minute later.

“He was talking about two or three people who had broken into the house,” Biaggini said.

No one was in the house with the man, who will undergo a mental evaluation. Biaggini said he could not tell if drugs were a factor in the man’s behavior.

The man is being charges with discharging a firearm and possession a firearm while intoxicated.

Investigators at the scene took the two guns into evidence and talked to the man’s son, who had come home from school.

The son sat alone on the hood of a blue truck in the driveway as police vehicles began to pull away.
