Project School Days accepting donations

Staff Reports

It’s time for residents to once again come together for Douglas County elementary and middle school students who need assistance with school supplies.

Douglas County elementary schools start Aug. 18, middle schools start on Aug. 23.

Project School Days, now in its 13th year, is a nonprofit volunteer organization that fills requests from teachers for their students in need of materials. Requested supplies range from crayons, pens and pencils to notebooks, dictionaries, backpacks and calculators.

Due to the economy, organizers are expecting more families will need help this school year. The community makes the project possible by donating money that is used to purchase supplies or by collecting and donating the supplies themselves.

The main distribution takes place the first week of September, but teachers may request supplies at any time during the school year.

Last year, approximately 30 percent of the district’s teachers participated in the project, providing supplies to about 766 kids, or 14 percent of student enrollment, according to project coordinators.

Contributions are tax deductible. Checks may be mailed to: Project School Days, P. O. Box 3052, Gardnerville, NV, 89410.
