Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada founder in Minden on Jan. 12

The Douglas County Democratic Women are hosting Jan Gilbert, cofounder of the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada, to discuss the organization’s legilsative agenda at their Jan. 10 meeting at the Carson Valley Inn.
Gilbert, a past president of the Carson City Chapter of the Nevada League of Women Voters and state board member, is a 20-year resident of Washoe Valley. She earned a degree in economics at the University of California at Los Angeles and has worked for economic and environmental justice issues at the state legislature. She will be a PLAN lobbyist at the 2011 session.
The former elementary school teacher served on the Department of Human Resources Block Grant Commission and was chair for two years. She also confounded the Nevada Empowered Women’s Project, a nonprofit organization representing low-income women.
Gilbert has been given many awards for her community work, including the Mike O’Callaghan Humanitarian of the Year Award from the Truckee Meadows Human Services Association, the Hannah Humanitarian Award from the Committee to Aid Abused Women and the Nevada Attorney General’s Women’s Role Model Award.
