Pony Express due Thursday
June 14, 2016
The annual Pony Express re-ride leaves Sacramento on Wednesday on its way 1,966 miles east to St. Joseph, Mo.
Riders are expected to arrive in Woodfords 9 a.m. Thursday on their way through Carson Valley, following the route established in 1860 as a means to transport letters through the Old West.
While riding through the Sierra at night is a task, riders tend to arrive on time when coming from the west. While there may be some cloudiness, a partial moon will help light the way.
Pony Express rider Kim Harris will be at Mormon Station State Historic Park 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., depending on when the rider arrives.
On Thursday the rider will enter Douglas County on Emigrant Trail and head north along Foothill Road. After stopping in Genoa, the rider will continue north on Jacks Valley Road and then cross to Carson City.
The rider is expected to arrive at Curry and 2nd streets in the capital at 2 p.m. before heading across the desert toward Utah.
