Below and near freezing temperatures are expected to arrive early Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures in Minden are forecast to drop below freezing at about 2 a.m. and bottom out at 30 degrees by 5 a.m.

A hard freeze with temperatures in the low 20s are forecast for Stateline. A cold front arrived Tuesday bringing daytime temperatures 20-25 degrees colder than on Monday. Plants sensitive to near freezing temperatures may need to be covered.

Heavenly Valley telemetry reported 5 inches of snow fell since 5 a.m. Tuesday. A 97 mph wind gust was recorded at Mount Rose Ski Area at 1:20 a.m. Tuesday.

Douglas County deputies responding to a noninjury accident near Spooner Junction reported icy conditions on Highway 50 between Sam’s Place and Zephyr Cove.

The accident was reported at 7:44 a.m. and involved a silver Dodge pickup that rolled and came to rest next to the embankment on the right shoulder, according to Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper David Gibson.

Due to the weather, the California Department of Transportation closed State Route 108 Sonora Pass at Kennedy Meadows on 4 p.m. Monday.

The pass will reopen once the weather allows and crews make the necessary repairs to the road, Caltrans Information Officer Angela M. DaPrato said.

“Please remember, weather and road conditions can change rapidly,” DaPrato said. “Motorists should expect the worst conditions and be prepared when traveling in areas subject to hazardous conditions.”
