Pine Nut loops trails workshop Wednesday
The Bureau of Land Management , Sierra Front Field Office has made available an environmental assessment on the proposal from the Carson Valley Trails Association for the Juniper and Pinyon Loop Trails Project. The public is invited to submit comments through Aug. 30, prior to issuing the final assessment and decision.
Construction of the trails would begin in fall 2014 and would continue for about four years.
While there’s not a lot of snow, most of the work is expected to take place during the fall and spring of each year.
One major job is construction of the staging area for the Pinyon Loop Trail, which would be similar to the one that already exists at Stephanie Way.
The preferred location of the staging area is on Pinenut Road 1 ¼ miles east of Wheaton Lane. A second site is located near Ott Way and Blue Bird Drive.
Trailhead amenities would be similar to those at Fay-Luther and Genoa Trail System trailheads. Both would be primitive, with no restrooms or trash receptacles. Hikers would be responsible for removing their own trash.
Less than two acres would be permanently disturbed by the trail building.
Builders would avoid removing trees and sagebrush.
The proposal would allow for the construction and maintenance of two, six-mile non-motorized loop trails.
The preferred location for the trailhead for the Pinyon Loop is located on Pine Nut Road (identified as trailhead east).
