Douglas County deputies will be picking up the baton 7 a.m. today in the 15th annual Nevada Law Enforcement Memorial Relay Run from Las Vegas to Carson City.

The more than 400-mile run left Las Vegas on April 24. Divided into 126 segments for the 126 names on the Nevada Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorials, law enforcement agencies throughout the state participate.

Douglas County will meet participants from Lyon County at Jack Wright Pass along Highway 208 and bring the baton up Highway 395 through Gardnerville and Minden at around lunchtime. They’ll turn the baton over to Carson City for the last leg of the trip near Indian Hills. The ceremony is noon Thursday in Carson City.

The baton contains the names of three fallen officers, including Las Vegas Metro Police Officer David VanBusKirk, who died July 23, 2013, after falling during an aerial helicopter rescue of a stranded hiker. He was a 13-year veteran of the department.

Also honored will be Southern Pacific Railroad officers John Montague, who was killed Jan. 5, 1905, in Sparks, and Jose Sancedo, who was murdered in a Palisade robbery Aug. 11, 1937.

Batons will be presented to the families of the three officers during the ceremony on Thursday.
