One lane of Highway 50 open through Kyburz Fire
Motorists are being escorted on a single lane of Highway 50 a mile through the Kyburz Fire as of 5:30 p.m.
The highway has been closed since the fire started 2 p.m. Thursday. Drivers are warned there will be delays and fire equipment on the road.
The status of the fire and highway are expected to be evaluated on Saturday morning to determine whether it’s safe to open both lanes to traffic.
California transportation officials are directing motorists seeking a way around the Kyburz Fire north to Interstate 80 through Truckee.
Motorists traveling to the Lake Tahoe Basin area are being directed to use Interstate 80 to Truckee and Highway 89 South to access all areas of the Lake Tahoe basin due to significant traffic delays on the Highway 49 and Highway 88 detours.
Boats have been cleared off of Ice House Reservoir as they are interfering with helicopter water bucket operations. Camping and shoreline use is still allowed.
The U.S. Forest Service, assisted by CalFire and Caltrans crews, is identifying and removing trees in the fire-damaged area of Highway 50 that could pose a danger to the traveling public.
