No one hurt in Dora Court fire
Smoldering cigarette ash may be to blame for a Gardnerville Rancho garage fire that occurred 4 a.m. Sunday.
East Fork firefighters responded to the address in the 1200 block of Dora Court for a structure fire.
District Battalion Chief Larry Goss said the initial arriving company reported smoke coming from the garage and attic of the fourplex dwelling.
Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies helped evacuate the adjoining units.
“Fire crews quickly found and extinguished the fire, and checked neighboring occupancies for extension,” Goss said. “The fire was confined to contents in the garage. There were no injuries to civilians or responders.”
Goss said that while the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, it does appear to be accidental.
“East Fork Fire would like to remind everyone that falling asleep while smoking is very dangerous,” he said. “Ashes from a lit cigarette can fall onto upholstery, clothing, or carpeting and smolder until enough heat is generated to ignite a fire.”
