New publisher named at R-C
Peter Kostes, a veteran of community newspapers, has been named publisher of The Record-Courier.
The announcement was made Wednesday, Nov. 10, by Arne Hoel, president of Tahoe-Carson Area Newspaper group, the family-owned parent company of The Record-Courier.
“Our company is fortunate to have an experienced community newspaper person assuming the publisher position,” Hoel said.
Kostes, 40, has been publisher and editor of the Sierra Sun, a weekly newspaper in Truckee, Calif., for the past two years. He became editor of the Sun in 1990. He later served as general manager and editor for three years before assuming the publisher’s role in 1997. During his nine years at the newspaper, which also is part of the T-CAN group, the Sun consistently received honors for editorial and advertising excellence from state and national press associations.
Previously, Kostes worked at newspapers in Colorado and New England.
“I’m very excited to be joining The Record-Courier and the Minden-Gardnerville community,” Kostes said. “The Record-Courier is a very solid newspaper, and good newspapers usually are a reflection of two things – a strong staff and a great community.”
A Connecticut native, he received an English and journalism degree from Western Connecticut State University. Kostes, his wife Julie and their 5-year-old Labrador retriever plan to move to the Carson Valley full-time by the first of the year. They enjoy the outdoors, including skiing and hiking.
Kostes has been an active participant in Truckee Chamber of Commerce activities, including serving on the chamber board of directors, and the Tahoe-Truckee Community Foundation’s marketing committee. Kostes also is a member of the Truckee Rotary Club. Two years ago, the club awarded him a Paul Harris Fellowship in recognition of club and community service.
