New Christmas store opens in Gardnerville

by Linda Hiller

This weekend at Country Carousel, owner Sandy Anderson is unveiling her new year-round Christmas store during a three-day grand opening.

“The closest year-round Christmas store is in Virginia City or at Lake Tahoe,” she said. “People can come here instead, and save a lot of gas.”

Country Carousel has been in business for nearly four years. Anderson has been so pleased with the store’s progress that she decided to expand her space from 350 square feet to 1,750 square feet, adding the Christmas store in the process.

Holiday items including ornaments, decorations, accessories and Christmas collectables will be on sale at the Gardnerville store.

“I have beautiful old world mercury glass ornaments, hand blown ornaments from Italy and Vienna, as well as collector ornaments and decorations including Annalee, Boyd Bears, Dept. 56 and more,” Anderson said.

Ornaments range in price from $2.99 to $35 and personalized ornaments are available for $7.99.

“These same ornaments sell for $15.98 in the Speigel catalog,” she said.

Other ornaments available include those with a theme of fishing, mountain lodge, sports, cowboys and more, as well as Looney Tunes, Humpty Dumpty and Mary Engelbreit.

Christmas mugs, pinecone candlesticks, Dr. Seuss stockings, Spit ‘N’ Whittle hand-carved Santa bottlestoppers, manger scenes and Christmas clothing are also for sale at the new shop.

Country Carousel’s regular stock of flags and windsocks, many on display every day outside the building, also include those of a Thanksgiving and Christmas theme.

n Historic building. Anderson, who owns the circa 1910 building housing Country Carousel as well as the Angler’s Edge, said she discovered signs of the site’s history recently during renovation.

“When we removed paint to renovate the front, we found the original meat market sign there,” she said.

The building also housed a bus station and Reiman’s Variety Store at one time.

Anderson and husband Jim have been married for 37 years and have three children. Coming to Douglas County from Estes Park, Colo., where she was in interior design and he was in the carpet and linoleum business, Sandy soon realized she could fulfill a dream here in Nevada.

“I wanted something different,” she said. “One day I told my husband, ‘I’m going to open a gift shop – it’s what I’ve always wanted to do.'”

Jim often helps Sandy run the Gardnerville store, along with granddaughter Cassie Patterson.

n Grand opening thie weedend. The grand opening will run Nov. 6, 7 and 8, with refreshments served at the store and the chance to enter a drawing for a Christmas basket. An open house is scheduled for Nov. 21.

Country Carousel is located at 1420 N. Highway 395. Parking is on the east side of the building. Store hours are Monday through Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call 782-8178.
