Minden woman tops academy list

Staff reports

Women are entering law enforcement in greater numbers, and 30 percent (7 of 23) of those graduating today from the Western Nevada State Peace Officer’s Academy here are women.

More than that, some of the top graduates from the Western Nevada Community College program are women. The graduation ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m. at the Nevada State Library and Archives building in Carson City.

“Lissa Rojas of Minden is the only cadet who scored 100 percent on all five final scenarios,” Academy Commander Katie Durbin said.

Durbin explained the scenarios are the cumulative practical applications of what is learned in the 30-week long academy.

Another cadet, Samantha Jo Moore of Zephyr Cove, scored the highest mark in the emergency vehicle operations course, a training course on operating vehicles at high speed with siren. Moore plans to work in law enforcement and will pursue a degree in criminal justice.

Cadets who also will be graduating from Douglas County are Andy Hettrick of Gardnerville and Hellie Dimitri, Mike Scott, Jim Silva and Tim Vazquez of Minden.
