The cowboy 3Rs will be on display this weekend, with ridin’, ropin’ and wranglin’ during the 14th Minden Ranch Rodeo at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

In its third year apart from Carson Valley Days, the rodeo is an opportunity for people to watch events based on what happens on a working ranch.

“We do this for the people who aren’t used to seeing this stuff,” organizer Joel Kruger said. “This way they can really see how ranchers really work.”

Moving the rodeo away from Carson Valley Days helped boost attendance at the event, which is a stop on the Western States Rodeo Association circuit.

“I’d say we got a few hundred more people just because moved away from Carson Valley Days,” Kruger said. “It’s working out, people love coming out to it.”

The rodeo starts with a slack performance at 10 a.m. Saturday, and rodeo performance at 5 p.m. The final competition is Sunday at 10 a.m. with awards following.

“We do this because that’s what this whole Valley was based on, cowboys working the ranches,” Kruger said. “It’s a big part of our culture in this Valley and we’re just trying to keep it alive.”

As part of the circuit, the rodeo offers an opportunity for riders to accumulate points for the final in Winnemucca.

“We’ve added in a couple of events for women, and we’re getting a lot of local girls involved.”

Included in the two-day event are ranch-style bronc riding, team roping, calf roping, women’s steer stopping among others.

Kruger said credit for the rodeo’s continued existence goes to its sponsors.

“The only reason we can put this rodeo on is because of all of our local businesses sponsoring it,” he said. “Every year we give out a Douglas High rodeo scholarship to one of the kids. We’re also going to be giving $2,000 to the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation. Everything we make goes back into the community.”

The Minden Ranch Rodeo XIV tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for children.
