Minden plans 2-percent trash rate increase

Staff Reports

Minden Town Board members are considering a 2 percent hike in trash removal fees which would add $1.10 to the basic quarterly residential rate.

The board approved the increase at a first reading on Wednesday. If passed at a second reading May 1, the increase would take effect July 1.

It’s the first increase in four years.

Board members rejected a suggested 5 percent hike which would have raised the basic rate $2.75 per quarter.

Matt Bernard suggested the lower rate, and recommended more frequent increases.

“If we did it every year, it wouldn’t be such a big hurdle,” Bernard said.

The board voted 4-1 for 2 percent with Charlie Condron opposed.

Since the last hike in July 2009, increases in landfill fees, fuel, oil and maintenance expenses have occurred every year, said Town Manager Jenifer Davidson.

In other action, the town board assigned member Roxanne Stangle to oversee creation of a citizens’ advisory committee.

Condron suggested a committee of 5-to-7 residents and Minden business owners who would meet monthly or quarterly, and make recommendations to the board.

“It would formulate input from residents’ points of view,” Condron said. “It could be a valuable tool and provide more information to the board.”

Stangle said she would be happy to take over the project.
