Maverik purchases Minden Gateway land

A convenience store chain has purchased 11 acres of the defunct Minden Gateway Center at the intersection of highways 88 and 395, according to the Douglas County Assessor’s Office.

On Dec. 30, 2011, Maverik Inc. purchased six parcels totaling 10.99 acres from SA Challenger Inc. The price of the sale was nearly $3 million.

Wyoming-based Maverik Inc. owns and operates hundreds of convenience stores and gas stations throughout the intermountain west. The company’s website says that “Maverik Store 460” will soon be coming to Minden.

Company officials could not be reached for comment, and the question remains why a convenience store chain would want 11 acres.

Originally approved in 2007, the Minden Gateway Center called for nearly 200,000 square feet of commercial space with an anchor grocery store, pharmacy, restaurant, and retail and office complexes.

Minden Gateway Center, LLC, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2009, leaving the property vacant and weed-choked, and much of the infrastructure unfinished.

According to a notice of trustee’s sale published in 2010, about $7.6 million was owed on the property. SA Challenger acquired the land for about $2.15 million, according to the assessor’s website.

Recently, the Town of Minden submitted a request to Douglas County for $75,000 in economic development funds to put toward a $220,000 grant from the Nevada Department of Transportation, which would be used for landscaping improvements near the intersection.
