Man arrested in kidnapping of pregnant woman

A Reno man was being held Monday in the Douglas County Jail, on suspicion of assaulting and kidnapping a pregnant Stateline woman.

According to Douglas County sheriff’s deputies, Usbaldo Palomino, 24, lured Veronica Flores, 28, his ex-girlfriend, from her Kahle Drive apartment in Stateline about 8 a.m. Sunday morning, by saying her brother, 26-year-old Enrique Flores, was drunk and needed help.

When Flores went outside, she told deputies Palomino punched her in the left side of her face. As she ran back to the house, she fell down from the impact of the punch at which point Palomino carried her to his truck.

As he raced from the area in his pick-up truck, Palomino hit a house on Irwin Drive, causing Flores to be knocked unconscious when she struck her head on the dashboard, deputies said.

Flores told deputies when she regained consciousness, Palomino was driving her down Kingsbury Grade into Minden and told her he wanted her to lose her baby. He said he was taking her to Reno for an abortion, Flores told deputies.

Flores is eight months pregnant. She told deputies that when she began to cry, Palomino struck her in the side of the head.

At the bottom of Kingsbury Grade, Palomino’s truck broke down and he called the woman’s brother for help, according to a police report. When Enrique Flores arrived, Veronica Flores told him she was having stomach cramps and needed to go to the hospital.

Both Floreses drove in one car and Palomino followed in his battered truck, according to the report.

Palomino and Veronica Flores had once been in a relationship, but hadn’t been a couple for the past three years, she told police. Since they’d split, Palomino had stalked Flores and was once arrested for it, she said.

Palomino was arrested at Carson-Tahoe Hospital and taken to DCSO in Minden after employees there reported the truck crash into the Stateline house, to police. According to a clerk at the Tahoe Township court Tuesday, the District Attorney’s office is charging Palomino with first-degree kidnapping and domestic battery. An additional charge on his arrest report for a hit-and-run, a felony, initially brought his bail to $130,000.

According to the clerk, the district attorney’s office is not charging Palomino with the hit-and-run, setting his bail at $105,000 for the first two charges.

Enrique Flores, was also arrested at Carson-Tahoe Hospital at 2:27 p.m. Sunday by a Carson City deputy on misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and obstructing and resisting an officer.

According to a report by the Carson City Sheriff’s Department, Enrique Flores raised the suspicion of deputies when he was allegedly seen lurking outside the hospital.

When deputies spoke to him, Flores became aggressive, the report said. He is being held in the Carson City Jail with bail set at $990.

Veronica Flores was treated and released from the hospital.
