Bail was set at $53,000 for a 39-year-old Stateline man accused of committing a burglary at a sporting goods store and breaking into a vehicle Tuesday while his wife was undergoing treatment across the street at the Minden Medical Center.

Eric Thompson is to appear Friday in East Fork Justice Court on suspicion of burglary, possession of stolen property and destruction of property.

According to reports, deputies were dispatched to Big 5 Sporting Goods in Minden for a burglary in progress shortly after noon.

One of the deputies saw the suspect run across Highway 395 toward the medical center.

Deputies found Thompson at the medical center in a waiting room.

He told deputies he was walking out of Big 5 and “a chick yelled, ‘What are you doing by my truck?'”

He said he didn’t want to deal with the woman, so he walked over to the medical center to wait for his wife.

Witnesses said they saw the suspect break a window in the pickup as he attempted to pry open the door.

As deputies arrested Thompson, he said he had a knife in his waistband, similar to one witnesses claimed the suspect used to attempt entry to the vehicle.

Deputies also found an iPod docking station and binoculars with Big 5 price tags in his vehicle which had been reported stolen from the store.

A surveillance video from the store reportedly showed the suspect taking the binoculars and docking station.

When Thompson was booked at the Douglas County Jail, pieces of broken glass were found in his shorts pockets. Thompson told the jail deputy he didn’t know where the glass came from. It was booked into evidence.
