All 16 Madrigal singers at Douglas High School have been selected for the 2011-12 Northern Zone Nevada Music Education Association Honor Choir, which will be performing 7 p.m. Feb. 9. at Churchill County High School.

The singers include Julianna Alire, Daniel Armbrust, Erik Downer, Kelsey Endter, Dinadan Gurney, Sara Holman, Kelsey Hubbard, Tim Klekar, Hannah Maxwell, Ashleigh Ota, Kevin Owens, Sedona Schat, Kyle Sims, Matt Stockton, Matt Tooker, and Krystal Vargas.

Endter, Gurney, and Maxwell were named section leaders, and Downer and Tooker were named assistant section leaders.

In addition, trombone players Kevin Owens and Hayden Harris were selected for 2011-12 NZNMEA Honor Jazz. Owens was chosen as section leader.

“On rare occasions it’s happened that we have all Madrigals make Honor Choir,” said DHS Music Director Bill Zabelsky, who himself was selected as guest conductor for the middle school honor choir. “We haven’t had as many section leaders before, and I’m quite excited about it. These kids are at the top of the group.”

The Carson Valley community has the chance to take home the award-winning Madrigal singers this holiday season. Zabelsky said they’ve produced a Christmas-themed CD, and the group is also available for holiday parties.

The $5 donation requested for the CD goes back into the program, Zabelsky said.

The DHS music department will also be performing at its annual holiday concert, 7 p.m. Dec. 15 in the high school commons. Admission is $3 or a food item for the Carson Valley Community Food Closet.
