Lots going on this weekend

There may be as many as 200 middle school students walking through Gardnerville and Minden on Saturday as part of the Suck It Up and Walk event conducted by the Carson Valley Middle School’s Make a Difference Team.

School Counselor Tracey Wadelton said this is the third project for the team. Their previous projects included 15 Days of Kindness and Dimes for Diabetes.

On Saturday, they’ll be raising money to purchase LifeStraws for people in Paraguay. The straws filter bacteria out of water so people can drink it. Tracey said that as part of Saturday’s walk, some children will carry one-gallon jugs of water the more than three miles along Highway 395 in recognition of the distance people have to carry water for use in third-world countries. Anyone can participate in the walk for $5, or $10 if they want a T-shirt. Check in at Carson Valley Middle School’s Old Gym at 9:30 a.m. The walk will start at 10 a.m. and go from the gym to the C.O.D. Garage and back.

Golden Nugget Automotive’s Mike Schiller says he’s bringing his drag boat to Big Mama’s Car Show on Saturday and he’d like to see other motor sports enthusiasts bring their vehicles as well.

“If you have a race car, we would like to see it,” Mike said. This is also the first year, the show is allowing “for sale” signs should someone like to part with a street rod they haven’t driven in a while.

He said last year’s show at Lampe Park had about 20 vehicles in the parking lot that should have been in the show. He said parking close to the show is being reserved for the seniors, for who the show is a benefit and asked those who park in those spots to move their vehicles or join the fun. The event is a fundraiser for Meals on Wheels and raised enough money to provide 5,000 meals for homebound seniors. Judging starts at 10 a.m. and the awards announcement will be 3 p.m.
