by Chuck Smock

Little League baseball players from all over northwestern Nevada will converge on the Carson Valley to play in three District 1 tournaments, the first of which starts Saturday.

“I think it’s going to be really exciting,” Carson Valley Little League president Val Linke said. “These kids work so hard all year to get here. It should be some really good baseball.”

The 11- and 12-year-old all-stars, who will be taking the first step on the road to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa., will play their tournament at Aspen Park. The 14-team tournament will start with opening ceremonies at noon on Saturday. First-round games are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

Carson Valley’s 11-12 all-stars will play their first game on Sunday at 5 p.m. The team is being coached by John Mannelly, who is being assisted by Gary Davis and John Brower.

In addition to the Carson Valley squad, teams from Truckee, North Tahoe, Carson City, Reno and Sparks will compete. The winner will advance to the state tournament, which will be hosted by the District 3 champion. The state champion moves on to the Western Regional tournament in San Bernardino, Calif.

The tournament will conclude next weekend, with the championship game set for Saturday, July 15, at 6:30 p.m. An “if” game is scheduled for Sunday, July 16, at 5:30 p.m.

The District 1 Juniors tournament, for players ages 13 and 14, will be played at Lampe Park, beginning Wednesday, July 12. Four teams will battle for the district championship and a berth at the state tournament, where the winner earns a trip to the Division 4 tournament in Bullhead City, Ariz.

Tod Bently is the head coach of the Carson Valley Junior all-stars, who open tournament play on July 12 at 5 p.m. Tom Goldston and T.C. Estes are serving as assistant coaches.

The championship game for the District 1 Juniors tournament is scheduled for Sunday, July 16, at 2 p.m. An “if” game would be played the following day at 5 p.m.

Three teams will compete for the District 1 Senior all-star title in a tournament that will be played July 13-16 at Lampe Park.

Carson Valley’s Seniors will open the tournament on July 13 at 8 p.m. Tim Curtis is managing the Carson Valley squad with help from Bruce Jacobsen and Tim Bunting.

The District 1 Seniors champ advances to the state tournament. The state champion will earn a trip to the Division 4 playoffs in Grand Junction, Colo.
