Liaison position gets funding

Staff reports

Private businesses have raised $20,000 to continue paying Economic Development Liaison Fred Jones to bring commerce to Douglas County.

The county commission approved another $10,000 to go with it Aug. 5, as promised earlier in the year.

“I think it’s well worth saving,” said commissioner Kelly Kite. “Our return on this particular position is incredible.”

The position was created in 1997. At the time, the Business Council of Douglas County, a private group, raised $20,000 and agreed to provide technical support if Douglas County would contribute $5,000.

The liaison provides information to business owners interested in relocating to Douglas County.

County leaders were satisfied with the initial results and in 1998 increased the public contribution to $10,000. The 1999 donation required a match of at least $20,000 in private funding.

Jones, who has held the liaison job since it was created, continues to work closely with the Business Council of Douglas County. He became executive director of the group earlier in the year when Sandy Cable stepped down.
