Laxague Feed and Supply celebrates its 30th year
January 4, 2011
The year 2010 marked the 30th year in business for Laxague Feed and Supply retail store in Gardnerville.
Jody and John Laxague opened the store in 1980 and have operated the family feed store in the same location at 1428 Industrial Way for three decades.
A traditional feed store, Laxague Feed sells feed, tack, pet and animal health supplies, as well as farm supplies. The owners have worked to make sure the store provides the expertise and products the community wants.
Jody and John are both University of Nevada, Reno, graduates with bachelor’s degrees in animal science, and John holds a master’s degree in animal nutrition, while Jody is licensed to teach vocational agriculture and science.
It has always been a family store with Laxague’s children, grandchildren and community youth helping out. The store has strong community ties working with local 4-H, FFA, high school and junior rodeos, and local clubs each year on community functions.
The owners said it’s a comfortable store where many things seen as innovations in the box stores have always been a part of the operation, such as welcoming dogs, bagging your own feed, special order feed mixes, and a Laxague wild bird mix.

Over the years, sales have shifted, they said. There are fewer livestock feed sales and more dog foods, horse feed and supplements, and wild bird feed sales. But all feeds are in the inventory.
The store also provides customers a chance to do business the old-fashioned way. Feed can be weighed on an old-fashioned platform scale, customers can cut their own length of rope, or enjoy a visit around the wood stove, buy chicks in the spring, get a brand inspection and ask for a hand-written invoice.
“We attribute our 30 years of success to hard work, a community with great customers, and a continuing need for a good traditional family feed store,” the Laxagues said.
