Each month, The Record-Courier profiles a volunteer in cooperation with Active Volunteers in Douglas, a nonprofit organization formed to address recruitment, retention, placement, and recognition of volunteers.

June volunteer: Veronica Pardee, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada

How long have you lived here in Douglas County? 29 years

Town of residence? Gardnerville

Where did you live before moving here to Douglas County? Palo Alto, Calif.

Family: Husband Skip and adult son and daughter.

Are you currently working or retired? Working for husband in our chiropractic office in Minden.

Where do you currently volunteer? Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada.

How long have you been a volunteer? Two years with BBBS as a mentor in the “Bigs in Schools” program.

What are your duties? Mentoring an 8-year-old girl.

How much time do you volunteer per month? Four-six hours per month during the school year, and approximately 12-14 hours per month during the summer.

Why and how did you become a volunteer? I heard Carol Scott, a mentoring program specialist at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada speak about their program, and I signed up.

Favorite aspects of volunteering? Watching my Little Sister blossom, and spending time having fun with her and exposing her to new things.

What would you say to others to encourage others to volunteer? Just do it and commit to it! It can make a big difference in a young person’s life!

AVID is a non-profit group that promotes, maintains and supports volunteerism in Douglas County and provides avenues for recognition and encouragement of volunteers.
