JoJo Townsell challenges Michele Lewis for school board

by Merrie Leininger

JoJo Townsell says the Douglas County School Board will have more of an “open door” policy if he is elected.

Townsell, 37, is running against incumbent Michele Lewis for the area 6 seat in the Nov. 3 election.

The area includes Ruhenstroth, Topaz, Fish Springs and everything east of Gardnerville, Minden, the Ranchos and Johnson Lane to the California boarder.

Townsell has never held public office before. He graduated from Hug High School in Reno and UCLA in 1983 with a degree in sociology. He played professional football for the New York Jets and moved to the Carson Valley in the fall of 1995.

n Youth sports foundation. He and his wife now operate the MeFiYi Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports amateur athletics for Nevada youth.

He is married to Suzi and they have two daughters, Mysta, 6, a 1st grader at Gardnerville Elementary School and Mia, 5, a kindergartener at GES.

The family belongs to the St. Gall Catholic Church and Townsell also volunteers as a coach with the Douglas High School basketball and football teams.

Townsell said he was asked to run by a “group of concerned citizens who are discouraged about the direction of the school board.”

He said he hopes to provide that open door for the people in the community who feel their concerns aren’t being heard by the board.

It is important for him not to have an agenda going into the school board.

“I have no hidden agenda, and I am willing to become a voice for all residents of this county,” Townsell said. “I will always thrive to support my children and Douglas County youth to the best of my ability.”

He said the residents have many concerns about the way their children’s schools are run, and as a board member, it would be his job to listen to all of them.

“You can’t just feel your opinion is the right one,” he said. “You have to be willing to meet with the people of the community and welcome that.”
