Hosptial to propose health initiative

by Jeff Munson

As Douglas County continues to grow, the desire to find common ground in a diverse community can be limiting.

But one thing most would agree to is the desire to live and work in healthy environments.

That’s why a community-based effort to find out what Douglas County citizens believe will make their communities health-conscious is a goal among area health care providers.

On Feb. 28, community leaders, doctors, educators, business leaders and non-profit organizations will discuss what’s being billed as a Healthy Community Initiative for Douglas County. The program is being sponsored by Barton Memorial Hospital and Carson-Tahoe Hospital.

“A community-based effort initiated and championed by Douglas citizens is the key to identifying and prioritizing issues specific to our community,” said Steve Smith, chief executive officer for Carson-Tahoe Hospital.

Five years ago, Carson City organized its own healthy community initiative called HealthSmart, which has brought residents and leaders together to form health-based goals for the community. Since its inception, initiatives have been designed to curb tobacco use, promote healthy lifestyles through diet and exercise and health-related workshops have been offered.

More than $300,000 in state and federal grants has been funneled into the Carson City healthy initiative.

Because of the area’s population surge, health care providers believe the time is ideal for a similar program in Douglas County, said Smith.

“When you ask people what makes a healthy community, the answer is almost always much broader than hospitals, doctors and access to good health insurance,” said Smith. “The people in a healthy community are safe and feel safe. They are well-informed and feel empowered to use this information to make choices.”

Both hospitals want to work collaboratively to encourage the initiative for Douglas County. People interested in taking part in the healthy initiative program should attend the meeting. Registration is required by Friday. Call 885-4596 or (530) 542-2945 for more information.
