Holiday Weekend part of Valley traditions

Minden's Holiday Weekend is 6 p.m. Dec. 2 at Minden Park.

Children will be entered for a chance to help Santa light the Minden Park gazebo Dec. 2 during Minden’s Holiday Weekend by donating a canned good.

During the event, food donations will be accepted for the annual Share Your Holiday food drive Dec. 9. When a child donates a can on Friday they receive a goodie bag.

“The lucky kid who receives the goodie bag with the golden ticket gets to help Santa light the Gazebo,” said Rachel Hamer, senior secretary of the Town of Minden.

All donations and proceeds from the event are donated to the Carson Valley Food Closet.

“Everything stays in the community,” said Hamer. “We are working with the Town of Gardnerville and Douglas Disposal to collect as much as possible for the drive. Every amount helps.”

Most needed items for the food drive include cooking oil, condiments such as mayonnaise, ketchup, barbeque sauce, etc., flour and sugar, herbs and spices, shelf stable liquid milk-dairy and nondairy variety, noodles, coffee, canned fruits and vegetables, and bisquick and baking mixes. Th food closet cannot accept any open items, missing labels or items dated more than 18 days pass the expiration date.

Friday night is the time when the community comes together and enjoys each other’s company and the season, Hamer said.

“It’s when everyone comes together,” she said. “It’s a small town get together.”

The get together will include fire pits with S’mores and cookies provided by the Carson Valley Inn and live entertainment by the Douglas High School Jazz Band and All About Dance performers.

Festivities start at 4:30 p.m. with the lighting of the gazebo at 6 p.m.

Children can visit with Santa after the lighting on Esmeralda Avenue. Hamer said a tent will be set up for him and vendors will be providing food, drinks and other purchasable items.

“The events are part of a Valley wide Christmas tradition,” said Town Manager Jenifer Davidson. “It’s what makes the community special and living in a small town great.”
