Highway worker hurt in Fallon crash
A highway worker was seriously hurt in a wreck on Highway 50 just west of Fallon in Churchill County this morning.
The worker, NDOT employee Michael D. Spanier of Hawthorne, was hit while performing roadway maintenance after two vehicles collided in a construction zone at about 9:25 a.m.
According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, the accident occurred when Belle C. Currie, 88, of Fallon, attempted to turn south onto Sheckler Road from the westbound travel lane in a 2002 Toyota Camry sedan into the path of a 2012 Nissan Armada traveling east on Highway 50 driven by Jamie L. Sweetser, 34, of Fernley.
The vehicles struck Spanier who was in the active work zone where NDOT personnel were resealing the highway. Several employees were operating equipment while others were performing highway maintenance and repair-related duties on foot.
All seven people involved in the accident were taken to Banner Churchill Community Hospital in Fallon by ground ambulance, Trooper Chuck Allen said. After a medical evaluation, Spanier was airlifted to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno by Care Flight while the others were treated and then released.
