The western entrance to Yosemite National Park reopens at noon today, but the connection from the Tioga Pass entrance remains closed.

Highway 120 from Groveland, Calif., to the park entrance was closed by the Rim fire, not long after it started on Aug. 17.

Visitors will have access to Yosemite Valley, but the section of road from Crane Flat to White Wolf inside the park will remain closed by the fire requiring visitors to Tuolumne Meadows to cross the Sierra elsewhere and take Highway 395 to Lee Vining.

Due to continued fire activity in the area, stopping along the roadway is strictly prohibited. The public is advised to use extreme caution as firefighting activities continue in this area.

Cherry Lake Road, Evergreen Road, Old Yosemite Road, Harden Flat and all other secondary roads and trailheads off of Highway 120 remain closed.

The Tioga Pass Road remains closed from Crane Flat to White Wolf within Yosemite National Park.

The fire has burned 246,350 acres and continues to threaten 1,900 structures. Fire officials expect burning to intensify within the control lines, with the possibility of embers causing spot fires beyond containment lines.

Winds on Thursday set several small spot fires south of Tioga Pass Road and along the fire’s northern flank.

Meanwhile, Carson Valley experienced some clearing of the smoke this morning with an 8 a.m. reading of 84, or moderate on the air quality monitor at Ranchos Aspen Park. That’s a decrease from 163, or unhealthy, just two hours prior.
