Highway 395 reopens after Riverview wreck

An elderly man was severely injured when he lost control of his sport utility vehicle near Riverview Drive in Gardnerville on Wednesday evening.

According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, the driver drifted off the highway and struck a billboard. The wreck was reported at 5:45 p.m.

The man had to be cut from the wreckage of a blue Ford Explorer that witnesses said rolled several times before coming to rest on its top in a field east of the highway.

He was taken to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno by Care Flight helicopter with serious injuries to his neck and abdomen.

Highway 395 was closed for 90 minutes while rescuers cleared the wreckage, according to NHP Trooper Duncan Dauber.

East Fork firefighters and Douglas County deputies responded to the wreck, along with troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Northbound traffic was routed through Dresslerville with the help of Washoe Tribe Police.

This was the second serious collision on Highway 395 in Carson Valley in less than a week.

A collision between a semi truck and a Ford Explorer occurred in downtown Gardnerville at around 9 p.m. Friday.

According to Dauber, the wreck occurred when the Explorer, driven by Carson City resident Christopher Olson, 18, drifted into the path of the oncoming truck.

The driver of the 2015 International tried to evade Olson's vehicle, blowing his horn and steering to the right to avoid a head-on collision.

The Explorer struck the Semi on the left side just behind the cab.

Dauber said Olson told investigators he'd blacked out. He was wearing his seatbelt. Olson was taken to Renown Regional Medical Center with serious injuries to his chest and legs.

Truck driver Kent Garza of Florida was treated at Minden Medical Center.

The highway was shut down for more than two hours, with the southbound lanes remaining closed until 2:35 a.m. Saturday.

A fuel leak from the semi did not reach any storm drains and was contained to the crash site, Dauber said.

A wreck on Highway 88 south of Centerville was reported at 6:45 a.m. Thursday. The highway was closed for just over an hour, reopening by 8 a.m.
