High schooler plays piano for seniors
It would be agreed that Lilyan Slais’s performance was unforgettable as the young pianist played hits by Nat King Cole and other classics, including “Because I Miss You” and “Bali HA’l” during a special luncheon for seniors on Wednesday.
“She has a beautiful touch,” said Slais’s piano teacher, Brenda McCloud. “It was an unforgettable performance and it was a great opportunity for her.”
Slais performed for the seniors at the community center and said she specifically chose songs that the seniors would know and enjoy.
“It was a lot of fun,” she said. “I’m glad they enjoyed it.”
Slais has been playing the piano for seven years and enjoys playing for friends and family as well as at her church. She said she became interested in playing while listening to her grandmother and great-grandmother.
“It runs in the family,” she said. “It was something I wanted to learn, too.”
According to McCloud, Slais performs well both on stage and off. McCloud said that music has made a difference in her academics and achievements.
“It has been a wonderful experience for her, and has taught her organization,” she said.
Slais will be a sophomore at Douglas High School in the fall and holds a 4.0 G.P.A. She plans to join the military after high school to become an anesthesiologist and will minor in music to continue her passion for piano.
