A proposed Heavenly Mountain Resort project to allow new year-round outdoor activities took another big step forward Thursday with approval from the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.
TRPA's Governing Board unanimously approved the Epic Discovery Project, which will be among the first of its kind in the nation if also approved by the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board and the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, according to the TRPA.
"The Epic Discovery Project represents an exciting, collaborative model for sustainable recreation that successfully balances environmental preservation and education with economic revitalization and improved outdoor recreational opportunities," TRPA Executive Director Joanne Marchetta said in a statement.
The activities listed under the Epic Discovery Project are tailored to a wide range of visitors and include canopy tours, ropes courses, hiking trails, educational tours, an alpine coaster and a mountain bike park.
TRPA, Lahontan Water Board and LTBMU have completed the environmental review for the project. LTBMU has issued a draft record of decision to approve the project, and Lahontan is expected to consider the approval of the project in May.
