Hearing in van standoff DUI case today
A California man whose arrest required officers to close Highway 395 when he refused to come out of his van is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing for felony driving under the influence today.
John Hansen, 54, of Clearlake, Calif., was arrested for drunk driving and resisting a public officer on Oct. 15 after deputies had to pull him out of his van.
According to the sheriff’s office, Hansen was seen driving erratically and gesturing at other drivers.
He pulled into the alley behind Sharkey’s and refused to open the door to his van. After closing the highway, deputies forced the van open and took Hansen into custody.
Hansen was arrested for driving under the influence with multiple prior offenses.
Hansen was arrested again Oct. 18 after he bailed out of jail in connection with the standoff.
He reportedly went to a garage sale on Mackland Avenue after he was released on bail and refused to leave.
Attorney Derek Lopez sought to have Hansen’s $25,000 cash bail reduced or altered to a bond.
EnEarl ordered that the bail stand.
Hansen is scheduled to appear for trial on the trespassing charge on Dec. 10.
