A Gardnerville man was killed in a traffic accident at a highway construction site on Interstate 80 on Tuesday afternoon.

Arthur Lucero, 47 was one of two highway workers killed in a construction zone when a California woman failed to slow down for traffic ahead and swerved into a construction zone to avoid hitting the vehicles.

Candace Gittins, 69, of Fort Bragg, Calif., was driving a Honda sedan eastbound in the fast lane on the interstate in a marked and active construction zone halfway between Battle Mountain and Elko, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Gittin’s Honda struck four pedestrian construction workers before it stopped by hitting the rear of a construction truck. Neither she nor her passenger were injured in the accident.

One construction worker, Vicki Stonvich, 53, of Spring Creek, died at the scene. Lucero was taken to Renown Medical Center where he later died of his injuries.

Two other workers were injured, one was hospitalized and the other received minor injuries. All the workers were employed by A-Core.
