Gardnerville kicks off holidays with a bang

For the fifth year in a row, Gardnerville will be hosting fireworks as part of its Christmas kickoff on Dec. 1.

The event starts three days of celebration in Carson Valley that includes events in Minden and Genoa that week.

Hundreds of people have attended the annual event, that includes the lighting of the town Christmas tree and the Heritage Park Pavilion for the 11th year.

Luck has been with the town over the last four years with weather cooperating for the main event, a fireworks show provided by Lantis Productions.

"The fireworks are an addition that makes the Town of Gardnerville's tree lighting special," said Senior Office Manager Carol Louthan. "It's something that people look forward to."

Since fireworks are not allowed in the Valley during other holidays it makes the event all the more special.

"The fireworks have continued to draw large crowds each year," said Louthan. "It delights audiences of all ages."

The annual event is full of old-fashioned traditions like horse-drawn wagon rides and visits with Santa while Christmas Carolers serenade the guests.

"I think the highlight of the event is the old fashion town celebration; the wagon rides, the carolers, the bells, the kids performing, the cold air, hot cocoa and just people coming together and having fun," said Louthan.

The Sierra Ringers and All About Dance are also scheduled to put on a show if weather permits.

The Carson Valley Christmas Kick-Off starts at 4 p.m. with Santa arrival at 4:30.

"Once again, the hour earlier time gives people extra time to visit with Santa and ride the wagons before the fireworks start," said Louthan.

The Pavilion lighting will begin at 5:30 and fireworks are scheduled shortly after.

Gardnerville will be serving Dutch oven cobblers, spiced cider and hot cocoa and The Gardnerville Water Company will serve popcorn.

Sponsors for the event is Gardnerville Health and Sanitation, Sharkey's Casino, Bealls, Carson Valley Medical Center and Heritage Bank Nevada.

"We appreciate each and every one of our sponsors," said Louthan. "They make this event possible."

Louthan also said the Town of Gardnerville is always looking for donations for the fireworks.

Donations can be made at the website by clicking on Main Street Payments on the left hand side, then selecting "CV Kickoff" in the drop down menu. Payments can also be dropped off or mailed to the office at 1407 Highway 395, Gardnerville.
