Gardnerville kicks off Christmas tonight
Mike Plut carefully tests all the light circuits to be sure the only surprise tonight will be what new piece Gardnerville has added to its light show.
“I only saw on the computer what it does, and it looks like a lot of technology,” he said. “It’s going to do things I’ve never seen lights do.”
Gardnerville’s Christmas Kickoff is 5:30 tonight at Heritage Park.
As a maintenance specialist for the Town of Gardnerville, Plut has been involved with lighting up Heritage Park since the first year in 2004.
A three-man crew spends about a week and a half putting up the lights on the pavilion, the trees, the street lamps and the banner crossing on Eddy Street.
“This year’s not so bad. It’s getting easier. This isn’t a one-person job, the whole town crew works on it.” he said. “It’s nice to have everything work, and there’s no glitches with the music. As long as everything goes good, it’s a good night.”
During the minute-and-a-half light show hundreds of lights will dance to the song “Winter Wonderland” by Alexia Phillips.
After the show, the Sierra Ringers from Carson Valley United Methodist Church will perform and a quartet will sing a selection of holiday music. The Town will serve hot chocolate, hot spiced cider and Dutch oven cobblers. Santa Claus will also be watching the show and taking pictures with the kids.
Carriage rides around the park will also be offered while visitors enjoy the music and holiday treats.
The light show will run 4:30 to 10 p.m. every day until January.
Heritage Park is located on Gilman Avenue on the way to Chichester. Turn east at the stoplight at Sharkey’s Casino off Highway 395. For more information, contact the town offices, 782-7134.
