Gardnerville businesses raise funds for decorations

Staff reports

A committee of business owners in Gardnerville want their town to look pretty at Christmastime.

With the backing of the town of Gardnerville, the group is raising funds to purchase holiday decorations and is planning a “Downtown Hoedown and Karaoke Contest” in August.

According to Sandy Anderson of the Country Carousel, the grand prize at the hoedown will be a trip for two to Mexico. Other prizes in the raffle drawing will be gift baskets, custom knives, dinners at area restaurants and three Ducks Unlimited prints, which are framed, numbered and signed.

The hoedown fund-raiser will offer food, drinks, dancing and a dunk tank, Anderson said, where locals may “dunk their favorite bartender.”

The Aug. 26 event will begin at 4 p.m. and last until the fun is over in the lot between Sharkey’s and the JT in front of the Carson Valley Heating and Air Conditioning building.

The goal, Anderson said, is to make Gardnerville look festive as does Minden during the Christmas season. The committee hopes to be able to purchase enough decorations to decorate every light pole from the border of the town at the GTE building to the stoplight at Smith’s-Scolari’s intersection at Highway 395 and Waterloo.

On the committee are Marie Lekumberry of the JT Basque Bar and Dining Room, Mashelle Begovich of Sharkey’s, Marcia Voeller of Especially for You and Jeannie Johnson at Historian Inn.

They – plus other busienss owners – have raffle tickets to sell. The group is in the process of asking other Gardnerville businesses to join in the effort, Anderson said.
