“From Here to There- Burr Trail” won patrons' choice award at the Maynard-Dixon Country Invitational in Utah.

Gardnerville artist Charles Muench received the Patrons’ Choice Award for his oil painting, “From Here to There- Burr Trail” at the 2013 Maynard Dixon Country Invitational at the Thunderbird Foundation in Mt. Carmel, Utah.

Muench, who moved to Markleeville in 2001, and lived there for many years before relocating to Gardnerville, is a regular at the Markleeville Artists Open Studio Tour.

The winning painting is a scenic looking across Capital Reef National Park in central Utah.

“The concept of open space, vast expanses of land that can be explored at will, is often taken for granted here in the West, Muench said of the painting. “There is a reason why so many travelers from Europe flock to our national parks or lonesome desert landscapes. I am still enraptured by these expanses. On first encountering this view, I realized I was in a unique place — standing on the Escalante Staircase National Monument, looking across the remote parts of Capital Reef National Park, and seeing the silhouette of the distant snow capped Henry Mountains.”
