Funeral services set for Jennifer Jo Smith

Staff reports

Funeral services will be held today for 17-year-old Jennifer Jo Smith of Minden who died from injuries she received when her car overturned and rolled into an irrigation ditch.

Pastor Pete Nelson will officiate at a 2 p.m. service today at the Carson Valley United Methodist Church, 1375 Centerville Lane in Gardnerville.

Nelson said Jennifer’s parents, Carl and Pamela Smith, and her sister, Carrie, wanted to set up a fund in Jennifer’s memory to help pay for children to go to camp where she had so many good times.

“She really enjoyed camping and had gone to United Methodist camps in the past,” Nelson said. “They wanted to see other children have the same experiences she had.”

Jennifer was critically injured July 15 when her car flipped into a irrigation canal off Buckeye Road. She was trapped under 4 feet of water for about 15 minutes before rescue workers could get the car out of the canal.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office investigation, she was traveling west on the dirt portion of Buckeye Road at about 45 mph. The speed limit is 25 mph.

Investigators believe she probably lost control of her convertible when she tried to slow down at a sharp turn and the brakes locked.

Jennifer had been in critical condition at Washoe Medical Center in Reno since the accident. She died Monday after she was removed from a life support system.

She would have been a senior at Douglas High School in August and was on her way to a college-level English class at the Douglas Campus of Western Nevada Community College when the accident occurred.

She was been a member of the DHS speech and debate team, and in her free time she loved to ride her horse Trigger/Shoot the Moon.

Jennifer also was a member of the Bay View Farms Riding Academy and worked for the state Legislative Counsel Bureau in Carson City.

Jennifer and her family moved to Minden in 1995 from Butlerville, Ind.

Memorials can be sent to the Jennifer Jo Smith Fund, C/O Carson Valley Methodist Church Scholarship Fund for Camp, P.O. Box 278, Gardnerville 89410.
