Fishing derby needs volunteers
March 30, 2017
One of the best outcomes of the Kids' Fishing Derby is watching a kid's excitement when they catch their first fish, said Derby Board of Directors member Tiffany Ellis.
"It's always great to see the excitement on their faces when they catch a fish for the first time," she said. "It reminds us all of the first time we caught our first and how excited we were reeling it in."
Ellis said between 1,200-1,400 kids have been participating in the Kids Fishing Derby for 27 years.
The derby is always the first weekend of June at Lampe Park in Gardnerville and this year marks the 28th year for the derby.
"It's a great event where kids can come out, fish and have fun," said Ellis. "It's family orientated and generational too."
Put on primarily by volunteers, the derby is free for girls and boys ages 3-12. The kids have opportunities to fish in four time slots starting at 8 a.m. and a special needs session is open Saturday at 2:30 p.m. to all age groups with disabilities. There will be volunteers on a one-on-one basis for the anglers.

"Volunteers are something we are really pushing for," said Ellis. "There's always some great feedback from the people who volunteer and the fun they have in doing so. It's a great way to get community service hours and participate in a local event."
Ellis said at least 300 volunteers are needed to put on the event.
"We need volunteers to help with handling and serving food, cleaning the fish, handing out prizes and more. There's always something we could use help with," she said.
Ellis said the Kids Fishing Derby is thankful for Raley's and East Fork Fire Department, two of the event's largest sponsors.
The Derby is set for June 3-4.
There will be tagged fish for a chance to win prizes and the grand prize for the raffle this year will be a Mad Dog scooter, a kids quad and a $300 gift card from the Sportsman's Warehouse. Prizes will be handed out to each participant.
Registration begins Saturday at Accolades Trophies, 1532 Hwy 395 #10 and 10 a.m.-1 p.m. every Saturday in April and May at Walgreens in Gardnerville. Or forms can be found at the Douglas County Communtiny Center.
