Fireworks will be the hottest thing in Gardnerville on what promises to be a chilly Thursday evening.
For the second year in a row, the annual Carson Valley Christmas Kick-off will feature a fireworks show after the live entertainment, which starts at 5:30 p.m. in Heritage Park.
Cold weather is expected to make the fire pits, warm cobbler, hot cocoa and spiced ciders popular.
According to the National Weather Service, the temperature at 6 p.m. Thursday will drop to 14 degrees, so participants should bundle up. But winds are forecast to be calm that night.
The Heritage Park Pavilion will be lit for the holiday season, and Santa Claus will be on hand, according to town officials.
Carriage rides will be available during the evening before the fireworks.
Live entertainment will be provided by Carson Valley United Methodist Church’s Sierra Ringers, the Boys and Girls Club, the Carson Valley Community Theatre’s Young Thespians and the Christmas Carolers. A musical light show and fireworks follow the live entertainment.
The town will provide the hot chocolate, hot apple cider and Dutch oven cobbler, while the Gardnerville Town Water Co. provides popcorn.
Fireworks donors include Carson Valley Medical Center, Gardnerville Health & Sanitation, Heritage Bank of Nevada, Cassandra Jones and the Law Firm of Houghton Jones, APC, Roger and Carol Sandmeier, Jonathan Parker and Yu Shimizu-Parker and the Johansons.
The fireworks show by Lantis Productions is estimated to cost about $8,000, according to Town Manager Tom Dallaire. Donations have covered $2,375 of the cost, so far. Heritage Park is located one block east of Sharkey’s on Gilman Avenue and Courthouse Street.
