Everyone is invited to library tea today
People who consider themselves friends of literacy should find their way to the Douglas County Public Library today.
That’s where the Friends of the Library will be having their 2001 kickoff tea.
The meeting will be an opportunity for anyone who has been meaning to join the Friends of the Library to sign up. The group will be voting on new officers and discussing goals for the new year.
Everyone will have the opportunity to ask questions and make suggestions.
Member Ted Conover said the group, which now boasts 100 members, simply does support work where it is needed.
“Our goals are to help the library’s programs by providing refreshments during programs or anything necessary such as supplies for children’s reading programs,” Conover said. “We try to help the library in any way we can to help them achieve their mission.”
Conover said besides active members, some members simply contribute dues, which start at $5 a year. The tea will be today at 11 a.m. at the library, 1625 Library Lane, Minden.
– Foundation fund-raiser. At the tea, the Friends of the Library will be selling tickets to the Library Foundation Champagne and Chocolate Reception fund-raiser, which will be held Feb. 11 at David Walley’s Resort in Genoa.
The money will help pay for renovations of the library’s meeting room. The room will be dedicated to Liz Johnson, who died last year.
“Liz Johnson was the person that spearheaded the drive in 1967 to get the first library in Douglas County,” said Mike Coleman, who is president of both the Friends of the Library and the foundation. “In addition to what she did here for us, she was also instrumental in getting libraries in the state prison system. She was a real friend of the library. That’s the reason we are honoring her. The funds will be for the renovation for the meeting room. It’s going to be nice when we get through.”
The room will have new carpet, a new ceiling and new closets.
Tickets for the reception are $15. A raffle will also be held at the fund-raiser. The grand prize is a one-night stay at the Imperial Hotel Bed and Breakfast in Amador City, Calif. Raffle tickets are $2 each or 6 for $10.
The reception will be Feb. 11 from 2-4:30 p.m.
