End of grace period for old area code is May 14

Make sure your mom knows.

May 14 is the last day the 702 area code will work for Northern Nevadan residents.

On May 15, the five-month grace period ends and callers will only be able to use the 775 area code. The new 775 area code serves the majority of the state, including all areas north and west of Clark County, including Douglas County, Reno and Carson City.

To make the transition easier on those who live outside of Las Vegas, both area codes were effective for five months, known as a “permissive period,” said Public Utilities Commission spokesman Rick Hackman.

Hackman said if anyone uses the 702 area code after May 14, they will hear a recording telling them that area code is no longer effective.

“In Northern Nevada, Nevada Bell and GTE have done extensive customer mailings. Additionally, it’s their responsibility to make sure the whole infrastructure is in place to include the 775 area code. It takes quite a bit to make the switch behind the scenes,” he said.
