Elderly man found dead in cold
An 86-year-old man was found dead next to his trailer at Silver City RV Park on Sunday morning.
An autopsy for Bruce Calvin Halsey was conducted, according to Douglas County Sheriff’s Sgt. Pat Brooks.
Due to cold temperatures that night, Halsey’s body was frozen. The cause of his death is pending, and Brooks said the investigation into Halsey’s death is ongoing.
Temperatures at Minden-Tahoe Airport a few miles away hovered between 0 and minus 2 degrees for seven hours starting at 1:10 a.m.
Halsey is not related to Sheriff’s Capt. Jim Halsey.
Cold weather and slick conditions have increased the chances for injury, especially from falls among the elderly.
Douglas County Senior Services operates a program called the Personal Emergency Response System, which is designed to let family members know if there’s an emergency.
According to the website, the users must have a land line for the system to work.
Participants get a pendant they wear around their neck while home. Pressing the button on the pendant will call the programmed emergency contacts.
They will determine if 911 is required.
If none of the contacts answer, the unit automatically calls 911.
A donation of $40 is suggested. Participants then own the unit and may take it with them should they move away.
