Douglas speech and debate wins at home tourney
The Douglas speech and debate team dominated their home tournament on Jan. 13-14 with big wins in multiple events.
The most success came in the Lincoln-Douglas debate with wins in both novice and senior divisions going to Douglas High students Michelle Schilling and Vicky Lopez. Nineteen schools from across Northern Nevada competed in five speech events and three debate events.
The following students from Douglas High School received awards for the Jan. 14 debate events: Kaitlyn Barger and Abby Chitwood, first place, senior public forum debate; Abby Chitwood, best speaker, senior public forum debate; Vicky Lopez, first place, senior Lincoln-Douglas debate; Andy Frost, third place, senior Lincoln Douglas debate; Michelle Schilling, best speaker, novice Lincoln-Douglas debate; Michelle Schilling, first place, novice Lincoln-Douglas debate; and Daniel Armbrust and Walker Spurgeon, third place, senior policy debate.
Additionally, the following students from Douglas High received awards for their speaking events on Jan. 13: Samuel Frost, third place, novice domestic extemporaneous; and Emily Tuggle and Michelle Schilling, third place, novice duo interpretation.
The freshmen competitors from both middle schools also had a great showing at their first home tournament.
The following are the awards won by Carson Valley and Pau-Wa-Lu middle school students: Cooper Whitemore and Kia Stoll from PWLMS, first place, novice policy debate; Ross Hatley and Jason Frogget from PWLMS, sixth place, novice duo interpretation; Christine Liddel from PWLMS, second place, novice expository speaking; Kai Stoll from PWLMS, first place, novice storytelling; and Logan Lalonde from PWLMS, sixth place, novice storytelling.
This year the Douglas High team has been granted the honor of hosting the Nevada State Speech and Debate Tournament, hosting schools from as far away as Elko and Las Vegas.

Mileo said the team has been able to flourish for the last few years due to the support and resources provided by parents and community members.
