Douglas speech and debate going strong

by Clara Ritger

The Douglas High School speech and debate team took high marks during their third tournament at McQueen High School on Nov. 16.

J.R. Stevens took first place in senior foreign extemporaneous. The novice foreign extemporaneous final round was filled with both Carson Valley Middle School and DHS debaters, and saw the following successes: first place, Elspeth Summersgill; second place, Colton Dale; third place, Nolan Nicholson; fifth place, Evan Kleiner; and sixth place, Cole Sonnemann.

In humorous interpretation, Clara Ritger received second place in the senior category, and her sister Amelia Ritger, from CVMS, received third place in the novice category. CVMS classmate Nicole Romaneschi took fourth place in novice original oratory.

The night finished with two additional trophies in novice impromptu, with Travis Moore taking first and Kevin Kendrick taking third.

The Saturday debate events finished similarly. Novice Lincoln-Douglas debaters from both DHS and CVMS added to the awards: first place, Molly Ellery; second place, Moore; third place, Nicholson; and first place speaker points, Kendrick. Mariana Aguilar and partner Dale took third place in senior policy debate. Stevens and Clara Ritger took first in senior policy debate, continuing their undefeated season.

The Santa Clara invitational tournament will be Dec. 7-9. A Douglas home tournament will be Jan. 4-5. For more information, contact Paul Mileo by e-mail at
