Douglas school district earns national award
Douglas County School District was recently selected as a district “preparing students for the 21st century.”
DCSD was selected as one of 21 school districts nationwide selected for the award, the result of a 1998 American Association of School Administrators’ study.
Superintendent Pendery Clark said she wasn’t aware when asked to submit information for the study that there was an award for the best districts.
“I was just asked to participate in a study that involved identifying characteristics of districts that are preparing students for the 21st century,” Clark said.
Clark said she thought there were more than 80 participants in the study.
The selection committee is chaired by Sen. John Glenn, D-Ohio.
DCSD was described by the committee as a district that “has undertaken significant future-focused programs” which will prepare students for the information age.
The results of this study will be formally announced at a news conference to be held at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., in January.
According to communications liaison Maggie Allen, the DCSD is the only district in Nevada chosen for the award.
Allen said the district’s strategic plan contributed greatly to the committee’s choice.
Clark said the strategic plan focuses on raising the standards of the basic skills taught, but also requires that students speak a second language, understand technology and be prepared to enter the workplace at the time of graduation.
“I think that is the major reason we were selected,” Clark said. “We’re very proud of that. When we first started developing the plan the whole focus was, ‘Are we doing everything we can to make our students successful?’ It’s very validating.”
She said other schools now will be referred to those that were selected. Because only two districts in California and only one was selected in Nevada, Clark said many districts in the West will probably be looking to the DCSD for information.
