Douglas jobless rate drops to 9.5 percent
The unemployment rate in Douglas County dropped to 9.5 percent in July, its lowest rate in four years and the first time it has dropped below 10 percent since December 2008.
July also marks the first month in years Douglas’ jobless rate wasn’t running above the state average, which was also 9.5 percent in July.
Only 2,090 workers were jobless during the month, a decrease of 180 over June and 380 fewer than the 2,470 at the beginning of the year.
More workers were employed than at any time so far this year, with 19,920 reported to be working, 1,520 more than the 18,400 reported in January, according to figures released by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.
The unemployment rate was 9.5 percent in December 2008, with 21,940 workers employed and 2,300 jobless.
Douglas County’s jobless rate peaked in December 2010 at 15.7 percent. That month there were 3,470 jobless and 18,580 employed workers.
