Douglas High needs debate judges for tourney in January

Staff reports

Volunteers are needed to judge at the second annual Jennifer Smith Memorial Speech and Debate Tournament at Douglas High School on Jan. 7 and 8, 2000.

The tournament, sponsored by the Douglas High School, Carson Valley Middle School and Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School speech and debate teams, will host more than 200 competitors from 18 different high schools in the region.

Jennifer Smith, a speech and debate student from DHS who was killed in a car accident on Buckeye Road in 1998, will be remembered through a special trophy to be presented to the school with the highest number of sweepstakes points earned at the tournament.

“The tournament staff is completely reliant upon volunteers to help make this tournament a success,” said Martin Cronin, speech and debate coach.

Persons interested in volunteering their time should contact Cronin at 782-5136 or at cronincrew@msn.com.

Two clinics will be offered for individuals seeking to learn more about judging speech and debate events on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m., and Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m., in room 401 at Douglas High School.
