The Young At Heart Senior Citizens Club is again preparing Christmas gift bags to be distributed to Meals-on-Wheels recipients and other homebound seniors in Douglas County during this upcoming holiday season.

This program has been successful for many years primarily due to the generosity of the local citizens and businesses.

Last year YAH delivered over 160 shopping bags full of gifts to homebound seniors.

These gifts are highly appreciated by the recipients and in some cases they are the only Christmas gifts they may receive.

You can participate in this program by either providing the gifts or by making a monetary donation for Young At Heart to buy the presents.

YAH needs gifts such as regular size shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, toothpaste, mouthwash, small games, scarves, gloves, socks, hats, non-perishable food, packaged nuts, coffee, and regular or diabetic candy.

“Use your imagination on what a senior might want for Christmas,” YAH member Paul Lockwood said.

Gifts should be dropped off at the senior center at 1329 Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville or call Paul Lockwood at 783-6583 to arrange to have your donations picked up.

Monetary donations can be dropped off at the senior center reception desk or mailed to Young At Heart, PO Box 1042, Gardnerville, NV 89410. Make your check out to Young At Heart.

All donations are needed prior to Nov. 20 so YAH have time to purchase and pack the gifts, and deliver the bags.

YAH is also asking the elementary schools to provide Christmas cards, DART and the high school students to help deliver the gift bags and local businesses to provide gifts.

“Participation in this program is an excellent way to start the Christmas season,” Lockwood said.
