Deputies halt burglary at retirement center

Two 19-year-old Gardnerville men were arrested early Friday during an alleged burglary at an assisted living center.

Stefan Michael Rodriguez and Shane Norman Koos are each charged with two felony counts of burglary, felony conspiracy to commit burglary, alcohol possession and petty larceny.

Koos is also charged with destroying Douglas County jail property and Rodriguez will be charged with crimes against the elderly, according to Douglas County Sheriff’s Sgt. Lance Modispacher.

The men were arrested at Merrill Gardens following a report of two men attempting to enter cars in a Carson Valley Medical Center parking lot.

After deputies arrived, an emergency room doctor who placed the call said the pair went to Merrill Gardens, a nearby retirement center.

No cars were broken into at the medical center. However, one sustained minor damage, Modispacher said.

A Merrill Gardens security guard showed deputies a 1986 Chevrolet pickup allegedly driven by the two men.

Koos was arrested near the truck at approximately 3 a.m.

After Koos’ arrest, deputies heard noises on the building’s second floor and allegedly found Rodriguez in a room shared by two residents in their 70s.

Modispacher said neither victim was harmed but both were “definitely upset.”

A letter addressed to the room’s female occupant was allegedly found on Rodriguez as he was booked into jail.

When deputies prepared to tow the Chevrolet truck, they found two 18-packs of beer allegedly taken from a convenience store south of Gardnerville about four hours before Koos and Rodriguez were arrested.

The men are suspects in that heist and allegedly dropped a 12-pack of beer as they fled, Modispacher said.

The two men are scheduled to appear in court Monday at 10:30 a.m.

Both are being held in the Douglas County Jail on $75,320 bail.

Rodriguez was allegedly found going through rooms in the nursing care portion of Merrill Gardens, Modispacher said.

He allegedly entered one room and was yelled at by its occupant, Modispacher said.

Also, the woman whose letter Rodriguez allegedly possessed was awakened when he was in her room. She screamed as Rodriguez allegedly reached across her, Modispacher said.
